A Bad Feeling: The Tale of EV-9D9

Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens collaborated on the short story "A Bad Feeling: The Tale of EV-9D9," which delves into the backstory of the incredibly cruel droid EV-9D9. This story was featured in Tales from Jabba's Palace, released in December of 1995 by Bantam Spectra.

Plot summary

Cloud City's detention area is breached when the sadistic droid EV-9D9 manages to break free. Lando Calrissian, the Baron Administrator, attempts to stop her from getting away, enlisting the assistance of his aide Lobot, the security officer Sarl Random, and a traffic droid known as 12-4C-41. Their efforts are unsuccessful, and EV-9D9 successfully flees aboard the Iopene Princess.

Years later, EV-9D9 is employed by Jabba as his droid supervisor. She is introduced to two new droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, and assigns them their duties. Following their departure, she grows suspicious. She eventually uncovers that Lando Calrissian has infiltrated the palace using the alias Tamtel Skreej. She concludes that the droids are part of Lando's scheme to recapture her. She makes plans to disappear from Tatooine to conceal her tracks, but she is attacked by an unknown assailant. Initially, she believes it is Lando, but it is revealed to be 12-4C-41, who is seeking retribution for the torture and annihilation of his "brothers" on Cloud City. 12-4C-41 frees the droids that EV-9D9 had tortured, allowing them to exact their revenge upon her. Furthermore, he disables her pain simulator, preventing her from experiencing any perverse pleasure from her own demise.
