A Fair Trade

"A Fair Trade" is a brief narrative penned by Paul S. Kemp and made available to the public in the publication Star Wars Insider 129.

Synopsis of the Story

Khedryn Faal, accompanied by his associate, Marr Idi-Shael, a Cerean genius in mathematics who is also Force-sensitive, journey to the Unknown Regions to locate a subspace salvage beacon on a deserted vessel.

As their ship, Seeker, nears the derelict, its proximity alarms activate, and another vessel materializes from hyperspace, immediately launching an attack that damages their engines. Reegas Vance, a competitor of Faal, appears in his customized YT-2400 light freighter known as the Blackstar.

Vance communicates with Faal, informing him of his intention to seize the derelict. He gives Faal a 10-minute warning before boarding with his crew, advising him to escape via a pod if he values his life.

Faal instructs Marr to dismantle the Seeker's engines. Both don hardsuits and deploy the escape pod. Despite knowing it's unoccupied, Vance fires upon it as a precaution. Upon boarding the Seeker, they discover it empty, with the hardsuits missing.

As Vance and his crew board the Seeker, Faal and Marr, clad in their hardsuits, infiltrate the Blackstar. They eliminate the remaining crew members and communicate with Vance on the Seeker, informing him about the engine's condition. They sarcastically add that there's enough caf for a few days and suggest cuddling for warmth.

Faal concludes by warning Vance that he might send someone from Fhost to retrieve him, but threatens to kill him if he ever pursues him again.

After initiating the hyperspace jump, Faal decides to change the Blackstar's name to Junker.
