Allegiance (Allegiance-class)

The Allegiance, an Allegiance-class battlecruiser of the Imperial Navy, participated in the Battle of Calamari circa 10 ABY. As the Allegiance began transmitting visuals depicting the devastation of Calamari towards the Deep Core, the New Republic Star Destroyer Emancipator picked up these communications and pinpointed the Allegiance's location. Upon the Emancipator's emergence from hyperspace above Calamari, it engaged and obliterated the Allegiance.

Description

A Super Star Destroyer, the Allegiance served the Galactic Empire following the resurrection of Emperor Palpatine. During the Battle of Calamari, this starship functioned as the Imperial flagship, broadcasting images of Calamari's destruction to the Deep Core via a hyperspace communication channel. Furthermore, the Allegiance possessed deflector shields.

History

The Emancipator passes in front of the drifting wreckage of the Allegiance.

Around 10 ABY, the Allegiance was in command of an Imperial fleet in orbit around the planet Calamari. It was sending pictures of Calamari's conquest by the Emperor's latest superweapons, the World Devastators, through a hyperspace transmission to the Imperial fortified world Byss, situated in the Deep Core. These transmissions were intercepted by the New Republic Star Destroyer Emancipator, under the command of Generals Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrissian. The Emancipator, already en route to Calamari with its own fleet, adjusted its hyperspace exit point to be just two degrees away from the transmissions' source.

As the Emancipator and its accompanying fleet emerged from hyperspace, a crew member serving on the Allegiance attempted to contact the World Devastator Silencer-7. However, this transmission was abruptly cut off when the Emancipator unleashed its firepower upon the Super Star Destroyer. The Allegiance, with its deflector shields inactive, was swiftly destroyed, along with its two Procursator-class Star Destroyer escorts, by concentrated fire from the Emancipator's forward batteries, operated by Zevulon Veers. The resulting wreckage was left to drift in space above Calamari.

Commanders and crew

At least one individual served as a crew member on board the Allegiance. This crew member initiated a transmission directed towards Silencer-7, with the purpose of alerting Commander Titus Klev about the New Republic's assault on the Imperial fleet positioned above Calamari. Nevertheless, this crew member's communication was abruptly terminated when the Emancipator commenced firing upon the Allegiance.

Behind the scenes

The Allegiance was first conceived for the third installment of the 1991-1992 Star Wars: Dark Empire comic book series, authored by Tom Veitch and visually realized by Cam Kennedy. It subsequently made an appearance in the audio adaptation of Dark Empire, which was released in 1994. In comparison to the other Star Destroyers depicted around it in the third issue of Dark Empire, the Allegiance appears noticeably smaller for a Super Star Destroyer and bears a resemblance to an Imperial-class Star Destroyer in its design. On one occasion, the audio drama refers to the Allegiance as an "Imperial Star Destroyer," while it is consistently identified as a Super Star Destroyer in all other instances.

The Allegiance's ship classification was initially provided by fan artist Ansel Hsiao, who designated it as the Allegiance-class heavy Star Destroyer within his personal online art gallery. This classification was eventually canonized due to Lucas Licensing's utilization of Hsiao's artwork for the ships featured in The Essential Guide to Warfare. Furthermore, the class name was incorporated into the Holocron's continuity database during this process, as confirmed by the artist.

Hsiao himself added the term "heavy" to the class name on his gallery. He states that it does not form part of the official name that was submitted to the Lucas Licensing continuity database. The term "heavy star destroyer" remained in canon as an informal designation for the ship's class, according to author Jason Fry in the endnotes for his book. Although he mentions its appearance in Dark Empire II, the class name used in his endnotes is the one Hsiao originally submitted. Fry opted to use the "Anaxes class designation" for the ship, instead of the designation Hsiao employs on his 3D model website. A similar alteration was implemented with the Bellator-class dreadnought, which was initially listed as a Star Battlecruiser on Hsiao's website.
