Assault on the Tantive IV

The Immortal, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, initiated a fierce attack against the Alderaanian CR90 corvette known as the Tantive IV. The objective of this assault was to retrieve the stolen plans for the Galactic Empire's formidable Death Star battle station.

Prelude

The Alliance to Restore the Republic managed to obtain the plans for the Galactic Empire's Death Star battle station, utilizing stolen Imperial communications satellites. These plans were then delivered to Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, who was aboard the Alderaanian CR90 corvette called the Tantive IV. Her mission was to transport them to Alliance High Command. However, the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Immortal intercepted the delivery. Despite this, with the assistance of Rebel starfighters from the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Independence, the Tantive IV narrowly escaped into hyperspace.

The battle

One hour later, the Tantive IV re-emerged into realspace. Organa intended to transfer to the awaiting Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Liberty. But, the Immortal attacked during the transfer, as the Imperials tried to regain the plans, forcing the Tantive IV to flee. The Independence swiftly responded, dispatching two R-22 Spearheads from Red Squadron for support, along with a pair of T-65 X-wing starfighters from Gold Squadron.

The Rebel R-22s moved to intercept the TIE bombers that were launched from the Immortal, which allowed the X-wings to focus on targeting Imperial TIE interceptors. Soon, more Imperial forces arrived in the form of Assault Gunboats from Tau Squadron. The R-22s, however, quickly eliminated the TIE bombers using their concussion missiles, and then engaged the new threat. The Immortal launched more TIE bombers, but they could not reach the Tantive IV before it escaped into hyperspace once more. The remaining Rebel ships retreated after eliminating the remaining Imperial starfighters.

Aftermath

The Tantive IV's escape was only temporary. As the Rebel pilots celebrated on the Independence, they learned that the Tantive IV had been ambushed again upon exiting hyperspace. The ship was captured in the vicinity of Tatooine. However, Organa made sure the plans did not end up in Imperial hands, sending them down to the planet with the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Behind the scenes

The battle was originally featured in the 1993 LucasArts video game Star Wars: X-Wing, specifically in the final mission of "Tour of Duty II: The Great Search", which was titled "Protect Princess Leia."
