Following the Imperial authorities' success in locating one of the snooper programs that she utilized during a data breach at the Imperial Transportation Ministry, Merei and her fellow student Jix Hekyl considered the possibility of erasing her account from Bakiska's.

As Imperial investigators (among them Merei's mother Jessa) began closing in on three repeater services, Merei and Jix made an attempt to break into Bakiska's warehouse. Their goal was to damage the machine that stored Merei's account by using a pulse-mag. However, the on-site security personnel intervened, preventing their sabotage and escorting them off the premises. These actions from Merei and Jix caused displeasure in their boss, Yahenna Laxo, a crime lord within the Gray Syndicate. As retribution, he commanded Merei to assist a bounty hunter in apprehending Holshef, an aging poet who was compensating the Syndicate to protect him from the authorities. Before Laxo could put his orders into action, he and his associates (excluding Merei and Jix) were killed by Imperial troops.
