Battle of Atterol

The space-based Battle of Atterol unfolded between the forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Galactic Empire. This conflict ignited when Rebel Y-wings, along with Z-95 Headhunters, launched an assault on a small Imperial convoy transiting the Atterol system.

The Battle

Near Atterol, two Rebel squadrons, designated Gold and Green, emerged from hyperspace. Their objective was to strike at modular conveyors belonging to Xibo Group as they traversed the star system. However, Xibo Group enjoyed the protection of the escort frigate Tegret. The Tegret responded by deploying TIE/IN interceptors with the express purpose of repelling the aging Rebel fighters before they could cripple the convoy.

Simultaneous with the Rebel and Imperial engagement, three Gamma-class ATR-6 assault transports belonging to the Rebellion's Storm Group materialized from hyperspace. Storm Group's objective centered around boarding and seizing at least one of the Imperial freighters carrying cargo. The Imperial interceptors were then tasked with preventing this outcome from occurring.

Rogue Squadron, the renowned Rebel starfighter unit, had prepared to intervene should the Imperials gain an advantage. However, only a limited number of their X-wings were available for this particular engagement. It is possible that the Empire would have deployed Rho Squadron, the standard backup squadron of Assault Gunboats, if the Tegret or its fighter complement had requested reinforcements.

Behind the scenes

Because players have the ability to participate in the "Raid Imperial Convoy near Atterol" mission in the Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter computer game, playing either as the Rebels or the Imperials, the two sides have conflicting goals for the mission. Furthermore, because victory is not required in order to access the next set of missions, the battle itself is considered canon, but the canonical outcome of the battle is unknown.

The ships that are listed in this article are the ones that are found in the battle Operation: Clean Sweep, and use the default craft that are assigned to the player.

The name that is given to the battle in this article, while it is only a guess, is approximated from in-game text that states that the attack happened while the Imperial convoy was passing through the Atterol system. Atterol, which the mission title says the raid took place near, is shown on the mission briefing map as a celestial body. A sprite that seems to be a planet appears in the starfield during the mission.

The mission title in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is unusual because it seems to be written from the point of view of a Rebel in the game, while Operation: Clean Sweep is framed as an Imperial operation.
