BG-J38's debut was in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, a film from the original trilogy that was released on May 25, 1983. The scenes at Jabba's Palace, which included BG-J38, were filmed during January 1982 at Elstree Studios located in Borehamwood, England. BG-J38 was made as a puppet that had only a few moving parts. The Star Wars: Card Trader app established the character as canon in 2020.
