Biography

As an eighth-grader, Bill Smith was deeply involved in roleplaying games. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York, and then worked as an editor for a trade publication. In 1990, prompted by a friend, Smith sent his resume to West End Games. His background in editing and gaming secured him a position there.

His initial task was designing adventures for Torg, another product of West End Games, followed by Cracken's Rebel Field Guide. In 1991, he quickly rose to become the line editor for the Star Wars roleplaying game. After a year at West End Games, Smith was given the chance to develop the Second Edition, which was released in 1992. During his tenure at West End Games, specifically in 1995, he received the "Favorite Designer" award from the Role-Playing Game Association "Gamers' Choice - Hall of Fame." (The RPGA is known as the world's largest organization catering to role-playing game enthusiasts.) He departed from West End Games in 1997.
