Fingerman is most recognized for his comic book series Minimum Wage, and his contributions to the comic book medium are extensive and diverse. While a student at New York's School of Visual Arts in 1984, he contributed to Harvey Kurtzman's (the mind behind Mad magazine) short-lived anthology for young readers titled NUTS! Simultaneously, Fingerman secured a deal to create a set of humorous spoofs of the Italian comic series, RanXerox, exclusively for the European market, appearing in publications like L'Écho des savanes in France, Comics USA, and the notorious El Vibora in Spain. Fingerman worked across a broad spectrum of genres, including children's satire, pornography, science fiction, and illustration, regularly producing content for magazines like Cracked, Al Goldstein's scandalous tabloid, Screw, Penthouse, Hot Talk, Heavy metal, National Lampoon, and High Times. Additionally, he served as an illustrator for periodicals such as the Village Voice, Video Review, Business Week, Guitar World, and numerous others.

He made the decision to concentrate on comic book creation in 1990. He spent a year working on The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and also created several titles for the Eros Comix line of adult-oriented comics. Among these were Skinheads in Love and Bloodsucker, a collaborative effort with punk icon Lydia Lunch. Additionally, he contributed covers and short stories to Dark Horse Comics and DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. Fingerman authored and illustrated his first graphic novel, White Like She, in 1993, a sci-fi social satire centered on a middle-aged Black man whose brain is transplanted into the body of a white teenage girl. Following the completion of this purely fictional work, Fingerman chose to shift his focus inward, drawing inspiration from his own life experiences. The outcome was the semi-autobiographical series, Minimum Wage, which was later compiled and significantly revised in 2003 as the Fantagraphics graphic novel, Beg the Question (which received an Ignatz Award nomination).

Fingerman has expanded his creative scope to include prose while continuing his work in comics. His most recent works include the humor collection You Deserved It, Zombie World: Winter's Dregs & Other Stories, the zombie graphic novel Recess Pieces, and his first prose novel, Bottomfeeder.
