C3-L1, a protocol droid belonging to the category of class three droids, was built specifically to communicate with organic lifeforms. The droid belonged to Busurra, a Wookiee who served as an aide to Loom Carplin, the Chief of Staff for the Alliance to Restore the Republic forces operating in the Atrivis sector. This occurred sometime between the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Hoth during the era of the Galactic Civil War. Because many Humans found it hard to comprehend Busurra, who could not speak Galactic Basic Standard, C3-L1 was always with him, acting as a translator to make his speech understandable.
