Calypso was a type of music often performed by entertainers during the Galactic Civil War era.
Before the events of 0 BBY, Bothan pilot Captain Diskret Stahn journeyed throughout much of the galaxy, even visiting the Abregado system. During this period, a certain melody became persistently lodged in his mind, much to his annoyance. Later on, while transporting the dancer Pei Yi to Naboo, his starship was attacked by pirates. The attack damaged his ship's engine, but he managed to land on Mustafar to get it repaired and resupply. Sadly for him and Pei Yi, they were stuck in the Mensix Mining Facility for a considerable duration.
While stuck at the facility, Stahn met a spacer who was good at entertaining. He shared his story about the tune that he could not get out of his head, as well as the events that led him to land on Mustafar. After speaking with the entertainer, Stahn decided to share his tune with him, and it was transformed into a song known as calypso. Following this, calypso music became a common sound performed by musicians and other entertainers in cantinas and other places around the galaxy. It was playable using a variety of musical instruments.
Calypso music was initially included in the Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided MMORPG in 2003, with its third and last expansion pack, Trials of Obi-Wan. Within the game, players who chose the entertainer profession had the option to learn the song from a non-player character known as Diskret Stahn.
The song had striking similarities to the theme used in the LucasArts game The Secret of Monkey Island from 1990. In reality, calypso is a genre of Afro-Caribbean music.
