Going back to 3951 BBY, the droid control hub situated on the Visionary managed thousands of droids found on Nar Shaddaa and various other locations.
Leading up to the Invasion of Naboo, the Trade Federation utilized battle droids entirely governed by the Central Control Computer. This computer, housed on a command ship or station in orbit, enabled the droid control program to transmit data and commands rapidly from one unit to another, irrespective of their location on the planet.
A vulnerability of this approach became apparent during the Battle of Naboo. After Anakin Skywalker obliterated the Droid Control Ship Vuutun Palaa, all the droids became immobile. Furthermore, should the communication channels be disrupted, the formerly formidable army would be rendered useless.
During the Clone Wars, the CIS battle droids would move away from this method. Nevertheless, the Separatists did furnish a portion of their battle droids with individual droid brains, allowing them to sustain resistance against GAR forces even following the destruction of the planet's central control computers.
