Forensics droid

Russo-isc detail Russo-ISC, a droid for analyzing crime scenes In the realm of criminal investigations, a specialized droid variant existed, known by several names: forensics droid, crime scene investigation droid, or crime scene analysis droid. Their primary function was to meticulously gather and categorize evidence. Their physical dimensions varied, with certain models exhibiting a size comparable to a thermal detonator. To prevent the accidental destruction of crucial evidence, some forensics droids were equipped with repulsorlifts. These droids typically possessed a diverse toolkit, encompassing probes, spectrometers, reagents, sample packs, and a comprehensive suite of sensors designed to meticulously record every detail of a crime scene. Any object or surface that a suspect might have interacted with would undergo scanning and recording at the molecular level. The droid would collect all trace evidence encountered, including fingerprints, hair, skin cells, other biological matter, and even less common evidentiary forms such as remnants of exhaled gases and thermal signatures.

As the Galactic Republic neared its end and the influence of the Dark side of the Force intensified, the Jedi's abilities diminished, compelling them to increasingly rely on analysis droids to aid in crime resolution. A crime scene analysis droid named Russo-ISC was stationed at the Jedi Temple and collaborated with Jedi Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano during their investigation of the explosion that occurred in the Jedi Temple hangar. The SP-4 and JN-66 models utilized by the Jedi also found popularity among scientists and police forensics departments. They operate most efficiently as a team, with the JN-66 conducting experiments and the SP-4 interpreting the results. Cybot Galactica reduced production expenses by reusing numerous structural components from its widely-used line of PK-series worker droids.

The SP-4 is engineered to interact with organic beings, featuring a humanoid form and enlarged photoreceptors arranged in a manner considered endearing by many. The slender stalk that houses the droid's vocabulator bears a resemblance to the vocal organs of the Pa'lowick species.

Equipped with wireless access to mainframe data libraries, the SP-4 is designed to analyze vast quantities of information and arrive at a single, precise conclusion. For example, in a hypothetical shooting case, a police department's SP-4 might analyze weapon discharge patterns, weather data from the day of the crime, biological profiles of the victim's species, and a geometric triangulation of firing angles to identify a likely suspect. Critics of SP-4s argue that droids lack the intuitive reasoning necessary to make the leaps that are often crucial for solving complex cases.

Police Prefect Pol Haus deployed forensics droids at the scene of the murder of Caamasi light sculptor Ves Volette. Ben Skywalker and Lon Shevu also employed a forensics droid to examine Darth Caedus's StealthX. The droid discovered a hair containing blood that matched Mara Jade Skywalker's DNA. Ben utilized this evidence, along with other findings, to convince Luke, Han, Leia, and Jaina, that Caedus, not Lumiya, was responsible for Mara's death.
