The Dark Empire audio drama represents a fully acted audio rendition of the Star Wars: Dark Empire comic book series from Dark Horse Comics. John Whitman adapted the work, using Tom Veitch's original material as a base. Arthur G. Insana took on the roles of producer and director, incorporating segments of John Williams's iconic musical compositions and realistic stereo sound effects. Time Warner AudioBooks initially distributed the adaptation as a pair of cassette tapes in 1994. Subsequently, on August 1, 1997, HighBridge Audio re-released it on cassette, and later, on May 5 2005, HighBridge Audio issued it as a two-disc CD set.
