This cannon, a turbolaser of significant size, was positioned in close proximity to the thermal exhaust port on the original Death Star.
During the events of the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel strategy necessitated that pilots navigate a surface trench with the goal of reaching the thermal exhaust port; a successful hit using a proton torpedo was anticipated to initiate a chain reaction that would result in the station's destruction. However, prior to the commencement of the trench assault, the Rebels were required to neutralize the surface cannon. Due to its heavy armor, a direct attack on the cannon was not feasible; instead, Rookie One and Ru Murleen of Blue Squadron created a vulnerability in its shielding and penetrated the superstructure. While inside, they targeted and destroyed a number of power relays, effectively disabling the weapon, and paving the way for the Alliance forces to begin their trench runs.
