Dinner Squadron was never a formally recognized unit within the structure of the Rebel Alliance. The name originated with Garik "the Face" Loran when he was participating in the naming contest for "Gray Squadron," which later became known as Wraith Squadron. According to fellow pilot Tyria Sarkin, Loran was supposedly feeling the pangs of hunger at the time. Kell Tainer subsequently adopted the moniker to describe a strategy employed during the Battle of Folor. This tactic was designed to divert the attention of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer named Implacable, preventing it from reaching Folor Base and discovering the transport vessel Borleias, which was experiencing engine trouble and unable to launch.
The fake Millennium Falcon ploy[]
To create the illusion of two X-wing flights on sensors, Kell and Runt amplified the power of their transponder systems and shields. Simultaneously, Blue Nine (Dorset Konnair) and Blue Ten (Tetengo Noor) of Blue Squadron, piloting RZ-1 A-wing interceptors, maintained a tight formation and modulated their shield output. This created an unusual sensor signature, making it difficult to definitively identify their ships.
The four pilots then utilized an outdated encryption code, which was known to have been recently compromised by the forces of former Imperial Admiral Apwar Trigit, to exchange fabricated communications. This was essentially broadcasting in the open, and the pilots deliberately exaggerated their roles, with Kell impersonating Tycho Celchu and Konnair acting as Leia Organa. This was done to deceive Trigit into believing that he was facing Rogue Squadron and the Millennium Falcon. The fabricated transmissions indicated that the "Falcon" was struggling to achieve escape velocity. The Admiral fell for the deception and moved to intercept the "Falcon," allowing the Borleias to complete its repairs and take off.
Once Trigit realized his error, he ordered a turbolaser barrage on the area where the four starfighters were concealed. However, Runt's exceptional piloting skills, attributed to his "student mind," ensured their safe escape. Later, Wedge Antilles drew inspiration from Dinner Squadron to create the Millennium Falsehood operation and its associated missions.
