Dragon's Spine (asteroid field)

The Dragon's Spine was a region of space populated with asteroids, situated near the planet of Tatooine. Despite its role as a navigational landmark for local explorers, there were documented instances of starships crashing into asteroids within it. During the Galactic Civil War, the Dragon's Spine became a battleground between the criminal organizations led by Lady Valarian and Jabba the Hutt.

Description

The Dragon's Spine, a vast asteroid field, was one of the oldest such formations in the Tatoo star system. It lay just beyond Tatooine, a significant planet in the system, stretching across space and generally considered safe enough to be used as a navigational aid by many explorers.

History

The Dragon's Spine asteroids in the waning days of the Galactic Republic

Sometime before the Boonta Eve Classic race in 32 BBY, an unidentified spacer hailing from another galaxy collided with an asteroid while traversing the field. This incident resulted in their starship going into a spin and ultimately crashing on Tatooine, close to Mos Espa.

Much to the annoyance of the local crime lord, Jabba the Hutt, his Whiphid rival Lady Valarian maintained a military foothold in the Dragon's Spine during the peak of the Galactic Civil War. During this period, even the Galactic Empire instructed its fleets to avoid the Spine and the ongoing conflict within the asteroid field.

Behind the scenes

Asteroid fields near Tatooine are not commonly depicted, as they are absent from all six Star Wars films. The video game Star Wars: Rebel Assault, released in 1993, was one of the first sources to show one. The field also made an appearance in Star Wars Math: Jabba's Game Galaxy, an educational video game from 1999, and in the now-closed Star Wars Galaxies, where it was first named the Dragon's Spine.
