Elespad

The Elespads were a sentient species of pachydermoid beings. Their skin exhibited brown or orange color, and they possessed a trunk, a pair of tusks, and two large, floppy ears. While the young Tatooinian farmer Luke Skywalker searched for his stolen droid, R2-D2, taken by a changeling known as Sasori Vader, he encountered several hostile Elespads.

Biology and appearance

As a sentient species, Elespads were classified as pachydermoid creatures. Each Elespad featured two small eyes characterized by a white sclera and a black pupil. These eyes framed a lengthy, pliable trunk, distinguished by concentric wrinkles along its length. From the lower jaw, pointed, white tusks could grow. Two sizable ears loosely drooped from the skull of each Elespad.

The Elespads possessed two arms, each terminating in a four-fingered hand. Each finger was capped with a pointed nail. Their skin displayed brown or orange pigmentation, with a darker hue on the underside of their ears. Certain members of the species were known to be shorter than 1.72 meters.

Society and culture

Elespad attire encompassed flowing, long-sleeved gowns in beige or white, along with red hooded aprons, and adorned shoulder pads and collars.

History

Around the year 0 BBY, several Elespads inhabited the desert planet of Tatooine, situated within the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. These Elespads crossed paths with Luke Skywalker, a moisture farmer, as he was searching for his astromech droid, R2-D2. A changeling by the name of Sasori Vader had stolen the droid. The pachydermoids engaged Skywalker in combat, only to be defeated by the Human wielding a lightsaber.

Behind the scenes

The Elespads made an appearance in Star Wars, a video game developed by Namco in 1987 that was exclusively released in Japan. Their designation was revealed in the game's Japanese language manual, where it was rendered in katakana syllabary as エレスパッド.

The precise timing and status of the plot within this game remains ambiguous. While it draws inspiration from the events of the first two Star Wars films, it diverges from the original script. The article "Game On!," featured in Star Wars Insider 135, along with the game manual, suggest that the changelings were "conceived as illusions mirroring Luke's anxieties, akin to the Cave of Evil scene in The Empire Strikes Back," while a blog post on StarWars.com characterized the changelings as "peculiar apprentices of Darth Vader." These articles present conflicting interpretations regarding the placement of the Elespads within the Star Wars Legends continuity.
