Breath mask

A piece of equipment fastened to the face, known as a breath mask, face breather, or respirator, typically featured a hose connected to a filter or air canister. This design ensured the user received a consistent supply of fresh, breathable air.
Furthermore, breath masks provided a level of protection against slight variations in atmospheric pressure. A standard air canister generally offered about one hour of breathable air before it needed replacing. A typical breath mask had a weight of approximately 1.5 kilograms. These masks did not protect against intense temperatures or a complete vacuum.
The contents within these canisters—also referred to as air-tanks or breather packs—were customized based on the species using them. Zuckuss, belonging to the breather Gand subspecies, required a respirator to breathe ammonia, as [oxygen](/article/oxygen/legends]-rich environments were poisonous to him. He carried ammonia-filled canisters connected to his breath mask. The respirator's tubes connected to a gas-processing unit carried on his back.
In certain instances, respirators were integrated into individuals through cybernetics, particularly after severe injuries that compromised their ability to survive otherwise. Darth Malgus, Darth Vader, and General Grievous are prominent examples.
All Kel Dor venturing beyond Dorin were required to wear antiox breath masks, as they needed helium and their own native gas because oxygen was also toxic to them. The Ubese also utilized breath masks. Standard breath canisters weighed around 1 kilogram and were priced at 25 credits. While breath mask costs varied, most models were available for 200 credits between 32 BBY and 8 ABY.
Breath masks could be incorporated into armor designs. Darth Vader's armor is the most well-known illustration of this. Additionally, breath masks were employed to deliver breathing gas to patients immersed in a bacta tank.
Breath masks designed for underwater use included built-in comlinks for communication. These masks also featured a switch to enable speaker mode for communicating with others nearby. Alliance agents deployed to Sedri utilized these masks, employing speaker mode to interact with the native Sedrians.
Certain breathers were used by scouts like Deeve from the Bureau of Scouting and Exploration Services. Deeve's specific model had eyes protected by a transglass piece, which also unfortunately prevented him from wiping away sweat. Its fit was also unreliable. It also featured tongue-activated monitor pads for conducting rapid atmosphere analysis.
