During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Far Thunder was one of the Republic-class cruisers introduced. Due to their inexpensive production, a large number of Republic-class ships were able to be deployed.
Under the command of General Keyan Farlander, the ship's initial combat appearance occurred during the Second Battle of Obroa-skai. The Thunder, along with nine other vessels, set an ambush for a Yuuzhan Vong fleet thought to have Supreme Overlord Shimrra on board. Despite the fact that Shimrra was not present and the Republic forces had only eliminated a Supreme Commander, the engagement was still seen as a significant victory.
After sustaining substantial damage in the battle, Captain Hannser, the commander of Far Thunder, successfully argued for repairs to preserve the Kuat Systems vessel for future engagements. The Lancer-class frigate Whip Hand was assigned to escort the ship to a fleet tender for repairs. However, a small Yuuzhan Vong fighter carrier discovered the ships and launched around sixty coralskippers at them. The tender was destroyed, and the Far Thunder was unable to defend itself adequately. Captain Ijix Harona and Jaina Solo responded to a distress signal sent by Captain Hannser. The two squadron leaders agreed to assist, with Jaina leading her squadron of X-wing starfighters into the fray first. The ensuing dogfight lasted less than thirty minutes and resulted in the destruction of the majority of the coralskippers, as well as the Far Thunder itself.
