Yorik-et

During the Yuuzhan Vong's invasion of the galaxy, the yorik-et, also known as a coralskipper or simply a skip by New Republic forces, functioned as the Yuuzhan Vong's equivalent to a starfighter.

Key Attributes

Being a bioship constructed from yorik coral, the yorik-et reflected the Yuuzhan Vong's disdain for mechanical technology. Instead of being built, it was cultivated, resulting in each coralskipper possessing a unique appearance. Nevertheless, they all shared fundamental traits, including a dark-colored canopy and a body shaped like a triangle. Pilots could interface with their coralskipper using a specialized mask at the cockpit, known as a cognition hood.

A coralskipper

The primary weapon of the coralskipper was the Yaret-Kor, a small extension located at the front of the craft that launched a scorching magma rock, capable of inflicting significant damage on enemy vessels. In addition, the coralskipper featured two plasma projectors at its front, sometimes called "rock spitters." To replenish its energy and ammunition, the coralskipper consumed rocks, small asteroids, and space debris. However, like any living thing, coralskippers were subject to aging and eventual death.

Furthermore, concealed beneath the front of a yorik-et was a small, heart-like organism known as the dovin basal. This living organ pulsed and quivered continuously, reminiscent of a Human heart. The dovin basal was the most crucial component of the bioship, acting as a miniature black hole that generated a potent supergravity field when activated. This field could overwhelm the shields of opposing starfighters and serve as the coralskipper's own defense by drawing in laser fire and missiles into the singularity's gaping void.

A Yuuzhan Vong pilot

Similar to all Yuuzhan Vong spacecraft, the coralskipper employed the dovin basal for propulsion, a feature that became a vulnerability when attempting to destroy the vessel. When the craft was propelled, the dovin basal's defensive capabilities were diminished compared to when it was stationary.

Coralskippers were mainly designed for space combat and performed poorly within planetary atmospheres. Their limited range necessitated the use of larger vessels for long-distance transportation across space.

Historical Overview

The initial recorded encounter with the yorik-et occurred during the early stages of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion in 25 ABY. This assault was spearheaded by the Praetorite Vong, who transported thousands of these fighters aboard their worldships to the icy planet of Helska IV. The Dozen-and-Two Avengers initially encountered these craft and suffered heavy losses, with only one survivor remaining after the coralskippers used their dovin basals to neutralize the shields of enemy vessels. They were later deployed in an assault on the planet Dubrillion, but were ultimately driven back by the planet's defenders. Lando Calrissian later examined a downed Yuuzhan Vong craft, which provided valuable insights into the extragalactic invaders and their technology. During the Battle of Helska IV, a yammosk coordinated the coralskippers, resulting in the destruction of numerous New Republic starships before the ice planet of Helska IV was destroyed in a New Republic counterattack.

These ships participated in battles throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War. In the war's final year, a new type of fighter was developed to support Supreme Overlord Shimrra's Slayers.
