The Multi-Troop Transport (MTT), a hefty repulsorlift vehicle, saw service with both the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Its primary function was the conveyance of B1-Series battle droids and Droidekas in the time leading up to and during the Clone Wars. A more advanced version existed, known as the Heavy Multi-Troop Transport.

Baktoid Armor Workshop both engineered and built the Multi-Troop Transport, basing its design on a modified cargo container. In a style typical of Baktoid, the vehicle's reactor and primary engines were situated at the rear, giving it a resemblance to a jungle creature. The MTT had the capacity to transport a company of 112 battle droids, including 100 infantry units, 10 security droids, and 2 commanders, all armed with their standard blaster rifles. These droids were held in a folded position on a hydraulically operated rack that extended from the front of the MTT, enabling rapid deployment into combat situations. This rack could also be detached.
The front of the MTT was reinforced with case-hardened metal alloy studs, designed for breaching enemy fortifications to reach its target. Boasting the heaviest armor and weaponry produced by Baktoid, the MTT was a formidable force.
The MTT's control center was manned by an OOM pilot battle droid and a droid responsible for gunnery and engineering tasks. Its armament consisted of only four 17kv anti-personnel blaster cannons, arranged in twin-mounted ball turrets.
Following the Battle of Naboo, the slow deployment speed of the MTT was identified as an issue. Later models, deployed during the Clone Wars, such as those in the Battle of Muunilinst, allowed for the deployment of droids in a standing, combat-ready state, four at a time. This allowed for immediate and efficient deployment, reducing vulnerability. Some MTTs were also repainted in Separatist colors and equipped with updated racks capable of carrying 12 super battle droids.
The MTT could be upgraded into a more potent variant, known as the Heavy Multi-Troop Transport.
Equipped with twin blaster cannons, the MTT served as an armed counterpart to the unarmed Platoon Attack Craft, which performed a similar role. The MTT's weaponry allowed it to deploy its B1-Series battle droids directly into the front lines, while the PAC was designed to drop off troops and retreat. Baktoid originally manufactured the MTT on the world of Ord Cestus.
The Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY marked the MTT's initial deployment. They were disembarked on the far side of the planet and launched an assault on the capital city of Theed in the early hours. In the occupation of Spinnaker, Trade Federation forces were transported by two MTTs.

During the Battle of Naboo, MTTs also deployed substantial numbers of battle droids. Following the destruction of the Droid Control Ship, all units within the Trade Federation Droid Army on Naboo were deactivated.
The original design conceived by Baktoid featured an open staging area within the MTT. However, the designers, tasked with creating a transport for droids rather than living beings, came up with a system for loading folded battle droids onto a large deployment rack. This innovation more than doubled the troop capacity of the MTT. The droid rack would extend, deploying the compressed troops, which would then unfold into combat formation. After battle, the droids would be refolded and reloaded onto the rack for transport back to base. The open chamber was still used for storing droidekas.

During the Battle of Ryloth, Wat Tambor made extensive use of these vehicles to transport treasure from across the planet to the main base in the capital. However, two MTTs were destroyed by Mace Windu.
They also saw action on Dathomir and Onderon, where they deployed super battle droids.
The MTT was observed in combat on Coruscant and numerous other battlezones, including the Battle of Kashyyyk. As of the Battle of Coruscant, MTTs were still being actively deployed.

The Multi-Troop Transport made its debut in 1999 with the release of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and related media.
In a preliminary draft of the Episode I script, the MTTs were referred to as "Maxi-Troop Transports." George Lucas's initial design specifications called for a large, locomotive-like vehicle capable of demolishing obstacles. In response, the Art Department developed various designs resembling battering rams and actual locomotives. Ultimately, Doug Chiang incorporated animalistic features, giving the MTT the appearance of a massive elephant, with a prominent "forehead" and gun turret "tusks."
Despite some sources stating a maximum altitude of 4 meters, the 1999 Star Wars : Episode I The Phantom Menace videogame depicts it landing from a significantly greater height in the "Gardens of Theed" level.
In the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and its 2002 expansion pack, MTTs function as the Trade Federation's "assault mech/troop transport" unit. Players are provided with them in several campaign missions, and additional units can be constructed at mech factories for 200 units of food and 350 units of nova crystals.
The MTT was also re-imagined in LEGO form in 2005 for LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and its 2007 compilation re-release.
