Force form

Force forms were stances utilized during battle that focused on meditation; these stances were used instead of the multiple forms of lightsaber combat. Every Jedi was instructed to connect with the Force, and the majority of lightsaber styles depended on this connection to some extent. However, the Force forms amplified a Jedi's capacity to perceive and manipulate the Force, enabling them to surpass the typical limits during combat, but this came at the cost of their physical prowess. These forms were favored by Jedi Consulars and others who, even in combat, depended more on the Force than on lightsabers.

Around the era of the First Jedi Purge, there existed four prominent Force forms:

  • Force Channel—Channel embodied the standard meditation practices taught to all Jedi and was the only Force form commonly employed by individuals other than Consulars. Jedi Master Kreia characterized this technique as "a gift" due to its modest enhancement of one's connection to the Force, without introducing any significant weaknesses.

  • Force Potency—Potency was inherently an offensive form, enhancing a Jedi's capacity to strike adversaries with the Force. This allowed for more powerful attacks, but it quickly depleted the Jedi's energy. It was most suited for those aligned with the dark side of the Force, as Force "attacks" typically stemmed from hatred or other dark emotions. Nevertheless, a Jedi of the light could employ this form to swiftly resolve a conflict if speed was paramount.

  • Force Affinity—Affinity was the optimal form for a Jedi needing to sustain a consistent focus on the Force. It enabled the Jedi to maintain their connection even during intense combat, replicating the tranquility typically found only in peaceful meditation, away from distractions. This form was for Jedi endurance, allowing them to remain guarded while their opponent exhausted their energy and eventually grew weary. Consequently, it was most effective when used in rotation with other Force forms, allowing the Jedi to replenish their strength before launching a counterattack against a tired opponent.

  • Force Mastery—Despite its grand title, Mastery was not limited to individuals with extensive Force expertise, although practitioners aimed to convey that impression. Indeed, one's command of the Force would manifest more powerfully, enhancing the Jedi's physical abilities for a sustained duration while diminishing the enemy's resistance to Force attacks. However, the exertion of this form significantly weakened its user, not only depleting the Jedi's energy but also restricting their ability to defend against the Force powers of others. Some individuals with limited Force proficiency would adopt this form to project a greater mastery than they possessed. An example of Force Mastery is demonstrated by Padawan Darsha Assant during her final confrontation with Darth Maul. Despite being merely a Padawan at the time of her demise, Darsha managed to employ some degree of Force Mastery to temporarily deceive Darth Maul into believing she was stronger than she actually was. Nevertheless, Darth Maul only discerned the full extent of her deception at the last moment.

Behind the scenes

In contrast to lightsaber forms, the various Force forms are exclusive to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Furthermore, most of them are only accessible if the player chooses the Jedi Consular, Jedi Master, or Sith Lord class. Even within the game, the Force forms appear to be an afterthought, as they are absent from the game manual, which features the lightsaber forms. Additionally, dialogue within the game portrays a dark-sided Jedi Exile learning the Jedi Masters' "lightsaber" techniques, even when they are employing Force forms.
