The Gatherers were a collective of Force-sensitive individuals, not affiliated with the Jedi, who revered the Force. Their mission was to disseminate the teachings of the light side of the Force and the Jedi Order during the First Order's rule. This organization ran a clandestine lightsaber workshop within Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, known as Savi's Workshop, and was owned by the Gatherer Savi. At this shop, visitors were given a guided experience where they could assemble their own lightsaber, an operation that needed to be concealed from the occupying First Order forces. As a result, the shop operated under the guise of Savi & Son Salvage. Gatherer groups, often led by a Gatherer named Kembe, instructed visitors in the art of lightsaber construction.
Guests can encounter the Gatherers at Savi's Workshop, a retail location within the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge themed area. The shop, along with the park area, first opened on May 31, 2019, at Disneyland, followed by August 29, 2019, at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Due to differing union regulations in California and Florida, the Savi's Workshop experience at Disneyland features three Disney cast members, all dressed in Gatherer costumes, and introduced using their actual names. Conversely, at Hollywood Studios, Savi's Workshop employs one costumed Gatherer, consistently referred to as Kembe regardless of the performer's gender, accompanied by two assistants dressed as typical Batuu residents.
