A naturally occurring formation known as a Ghothian slime pool was indigenous to the Ghothia system, situated within the Outer Rim Territories'. Not long after the Battle of Yavin, in a communication dispatched around that time, Imperial Intelligence officer Hyndis Kogler expressed considerable dissatisfaction with an initiative put forth by their Intelligence colleague, Doctor Tobias. Kogler disparagingly compared Tobias' intelligence, as evidenced by the initiative, to that of certain Ghothian slime pools located on the planet Stensen's Colony.
Within the Stensen sector of the Outer Rim Territories', specifically in the Ghothia system, one could find a natural formation linked to slime, called a Ghothian slime pool. These pools were present on Stensen's Colony, a planetary body residing in the Stensen's Colony system within the sector's boundaries.
Sometime around the time immediately following the Battle of Yavin, Hyndis Kogler, an officer serving in the Infiltration division of the Galactic Empire's Intelligence agency, sent a message to Doctor Tobias, who was part of the Tech branch of the same agency. Kogler was deeply displeased with Tobias' imprudent scheme to deploy several modified 3PO-series protocol droids in an attempt to penetrate Rebel Alliance installations. In the message, the officer asserted that certain Ghothian slime pools on Stensen's Colony demonstrated a "greater degree of intelligence" than Tobias had displayed when conceiving of the idea. Imperial Intelligence later incorporated the message into a report prepared for an Imperial Grand Moff, which was subsequently added by Alliance historian Major Arhul Hextrophon to a collection of Imperial documents intended for Alliance Supreme Commander Mon Mothma and other Rebel officers.
The 1989 Imperial Sourcebook, authored by Greg Gorden for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, marked the initial mention of Ghothian slime pools—written as "Ghothian Slime pools." The spelling of their name was later adjusted to "Ghothian slime pools" in the 1994 Second Edition of the same book.
