Golrath Station, a derelict smelting facility for magma, was situated within the mouth of a volcano on the planet of Golrath. Following the Rebel Alliance's defeat at Hoth and their subsequent departure from Echo Base, it briefly served as a Rebel base in 3 ABY. Shortly after the Rebels left, they obliterated Golrath Station upon discovering that the planet's foundation rock could replay nearby events, potentially compromising sensitive information.
A substantial force field dome shielded the entire station from the extreme thermal temperatures and the periodic surges of lava on the volcano's edges. The bedrock forming the station's underpinnings possessed peculiar properties. When subjected to heat, the mineral compounds absorbed surrounding light; conversely, when cooled, they emitted this light, effectively creating a natural hologram.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth, the Rebel Alliance briefly established a temporary operational center on Golrath. This base served as a provisional training ground, but due to the diminishing magma supply, they abandoned the inhospitable location to relocate to the more hospitable world of Arbra.
Imperial forces became aware of the abandoned station's presence, prompting Darth Vader to dispatch Lieutenant Mils Giel to oversee a research team, hoping to uncover Alliance intelligence. During his time there, he found holograms projected from the bedrock foundations displaying Rebel training exercises. He immediately sent a message to Darth Vader, detailing his discoveries.
Simultaneously, Princess Leia Organa also learned of the station's holographic capabilities. Knowing that Golrath Station was now under Imperial control, she personally commanded a strike force to the planet's surface to destroy any evidence of their past activities. Giel and Princess Leia confronted each other within the plant's reactor core chamber. Giel activated the overload circuits, hoping that destroying the base would also eliminate Princess Leia. Both Leia and Giel successfully escaped before the reactor core detonated, obliterating the station.
Golrath Station featured as a setting in two issues of the original Marvel Star Wars comic run, penned by Archie Goodwin and David Michelinie, and brought to life by the illustrations of Al Williamson and Tom Palmer.
