The ambition of Darth Plagueis, a Sith Lord, led to the inception of the Grand Experiment. Plagueis sought to gain control over midi-chlorians, those sentient microscopic entities that granted certain beings the ability to command the power of the Force, with the ultimate goal of creating a new life form. The Dark Lord not only considered the project a failure, but his actions resulted in an unforeseen consequence: the midi-chlorians' creation of Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One prophesied in Jedi lore, destined to bring balance to the Force by eliminating the Sith.
In the twilight years of the Galactic Republic, Darth Plagueis and his apprentice, Darth Sidious, both Sith Lords, embarked on the Grand Experiment on the moon of Sojourn in 42 BBY. Plagueis aimed to create a living embodiment of the Force, employing Sith alchemy and the dark side of the Force. He attempted to influence the midi-chlorians to bring about life. However, his efforts were fruitless, wiping out his other experiments, leading Plagueis to believe the project had failed. Years later, during the Crisis on Naboo in 32 BBY, Plagueis was astounded by the discovery of Anakin Skywalker, a young Human boy without a father. Plagueis realized the midi-chlorians had not only resisted his will, but had also retaliated by conceiving the Jedi Order's long-awaited Chosen One, a Jedi destined to restore balance to the Force through the destruction of the Sith.
Darth Sidious, unlike his master, viewed Skywalker's emergence as an opportunity to exploit the Jedi's own prophecy for the Sith's benefit. Following his assassination of Plagueis, Sidious, operating under the guise of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, cultivated a friendship with the young padawan, intending to gradually corrupt him over time until Skywalker succumbed to the dark side—an objective he ultimately achieved. Nevertheless, Anakin eventually found redemption, rejecting his Master and the dark side, and ultimately killed the Emperor before meeting his own demise.
