The Gromas system was a star system situated within the Perkell sector of the Mid Rim, and it encompassed Gromas along with its moons that were abundant with phrikite.
For the most part, the Gromas system was overlooked among the industrial and mining planets of the Perkell sector. It was primarily known for its visually striking array of multicolored moons. However, this changed just prior to 0 BBY, when phrikite reserves were found on these moons. Prospectors submitted competing claims at Trancret, the sector's capital, and swiftly created exploration firms in search of financial support on the Trancret Stock Exchange. This period of heightened activity on Trancret, as well as exploration within the system, came to an abrupt halt when the Galactic Empire, in need of resources for the Dark Trooper Project, nullified all existing claims and annexed the entire system. The project's highly classified nature led to the system's closure, much to the disappointment of the Trancret natives who had anticipated employment opportunities or collaboration with the Empire.
The Empire established a substantial mining and processing complex on Gromas 16, along with several smaller satellite facilities on other moons. This continued until the Dark Trooper Project was concluded and subsequently abandoned. Imperial warships ceased their regular routes through the system, allowing a few daring explorers to venture back to Gromas. There, they discovered the Gromas 16 base in ruins due to a reactor malfunction (which was actually the result of Rebel sabotage), and the facilities were deserted, along with left-behind equipment, including mining droids.
Following Emperor Palpatine's death, a new era of claim filings and exploration began. The GromasMines Cooperative was formed to adjudicate the various claims. Its operations triggered a fresh wave of economic prosperity for the entire sector.
