IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tank

The IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tank, also referenced as the Hailfire droid or the wheel droid, represented a droid tank engineered by Haor Chall Engineering for the benefit of the InterGalactic Banking Clan leading up to and during the period of the Clone Wars. Its effectiveness against armor was substantial.

Description

A Hailfire-class droid.

The Hailfire-class droid tank was a mobile and self-regulating missile platform. It possessed the capability to obliterate enemy vehicles and decimate entire platoons consisting of enemy soldiers. Its design incorporated large, hoop-like wheels situated on either flank of the primary armored command module. This allowed for operational capacity across virtually any terrain, and at considerable velocities.

The Hailfire-class was comprehensively armed, featuring missile launchers mounted on each side of its head. Each missile rack contained 15 guided rocket warheads, each with sufficient explosive yield to inflict grievous harm upon enemy assets. A precisely aimed shot from one of these missiles had the potential to destroy a Republic AT-TE walker, and proved effective against other armored units. Each Hailfire-class droid tank also integrated a retractable double blaster system, intended for engagement against infantry and other lightly armored targets.

The Hailfire-class also came in a variety of configurations, each equipped with different weapon systems. These configurations included heavy blaster artillery, ion cannons, or anti-personnel stun weapon batteries. The inward-facing design of the wheels afforded the Hailfire units a broader lateral range, as well as the capability to crush tightly packed groups of soldiers and smaller vehicles.

History

Prior to the Clone Wars, the Hailfire-class droid was deployed by the Banking Clan's "Collections and Security Division" (a euphemistic designation) to penalize clients who had defaulted on their debt repayments. The Banking Clan committed the droid to the combined forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, though under a non-exclusive arrangement.

Hailfire-class droid tanks made their initial appearance as part of the Confederacy of Independent Systems's military forces during the Battle of Geonosis, where they successfully disabled or destroyed numerous AT-TEs and inflicted casualties upon countless clone troopers before being eliminated by LAAT/i gunships. Throughout the Clone Wars, numerous Hailfire-class droids, encompassing various models and types, continued to participate in battles against the Republic's army, and were employed extensively during the early stages of the conflict. They represented a sufficiently unique threat that the GAR established specialized clone anti-hailfire units, such as Bantha Squad, to more effectively combat them.

A Hailfire droid was deployed in a Separatist assault on a Republic base housing rare Jedi artifacts. However, it was destroyed by BARC speeder-equipped clone trooper Trooper. Due to the limited supply of 30 warheads for each unit, the Banking Clan temporarily withdrew the Hailfire from active combat. The Clan devised a solution to this limitation: air-mobile refresh droids were paired with the Hailfire-class droids on the battlefield to replenish their warhead supplies. As a result, the Hailfire-class once again became a significant threat to slow-moving vehicles. During the Clone Wars, the Hailfire droid, like many other vehicles, was repainted in the Separatist color scheme.

Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice, Darth Vader, these units were deactivated. However, certain Hailfire-class components were reactivated and utilized by the Wookiees against Imperial landing forces during the Empire's subjugation of the planet in 19 BBY.

In 1 ABY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic deployed Hailfire-class droids during a number of attacks targeting cities under Imperial control.

Behind the scenes

In Attack of the Clones, Confederate rockets, including those launched by Hailfire-class droids, were designed to emit black smoke trails, contrasting with the white trails produced by Republic missiles.

In Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns, Hailfire droids are incorrectly depicted as anti-air vehicles.
