The high-altitude specialist life support pack functioned as a life support system. Pilots operating the UT-60D U-wing starfighter/support craft for the Alliance to Restore the Republic utilized this pack, opting for it over the more common Novaldex Diagnostech life support unit typically used by rebel pilots. The reason for this substitution was that U-wing pilots frequently needed to expose themselves to high-altitude conditions by opening their craft's doors. This was necessary either to prepare for troop deployment or to allow a gunner to engage targets with weapons.
Within the rebel Blue Squadron, individuals such as Laren Joma, Heff Tobber, and Calum Gram were known to equip the high-altitude specialist life support packs. The apparatus incorporated a white control panel, featuring an array of buttons, which was secured to the wearer's chest using four black straps.
The high-altitude specialist life support pack made its initial appearance in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, part of the Anthology Series. Its identification was first provided in the reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, authored by Pablo Hidalgo.
