Life support

The support could be temporary or permanent, and was often used to enable survival in environments that were either contaminated or otherwise unsuitable for the being's natural needs.

Within starships

The interior of a starship was rendered habitable by life support systems, which counteracted the deadly conditions of space. One crucial function involved refreshing the air supply inside the vessel, making it breathable. Other factors regulated included the surrounding temperature.

Some vessels, for instance the Imperial TIE/ln space superiority starfighter, lacked these systems. This deficiency required pilots to utilize life support chest units with hoses connected to their helmets, ensuring a supply of essential gases. In a similar vein, Woan Barso constantly wore a vac-suit because he distrusted the life support capabilities of his dilapidated container tug.

Independent Life Support

Darth Vader's mask incorporated life support technology because, due to his injuries, he could not breathe on his own.

Individual life-sustaining technologies manifested in various forms, contingent on the degree to which users depended on them. As an example, Kel Dors, such as Jedi Master Plo Koon, only needed to use a specialized breath mask and protective eyewear to operate in conditions differing from those of their home planet, Dorin. Conversely, Anakin Skywalker sustained such severe injuries during his duel on Mustafar that he required armor that provided complete, ongoing life support; without it, he would perish. Likewise, in their final days, the monarchs of Mon Cala, namely Lee-Char and Ech-Char, relied on life support to survive.
