Jak Bremen was a male Human who held the rank of colonel within the New Republic military. During Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaigns against the New Republic circa 9 ABY, he served as the Director of Security for the New Republic Inner Council.
Jak Bremen originated from the planet Shiffrin, located in the Outer Rim Territories. He was the son of Kallin Bremen, a farmer. Kallin organized local landowners in a peaceful protest against the Galactic Empire's forced acquisition of land for hfredium mining. Accused of being a "Rebel agitator," Kallin Bremen was executed by order of the sector Moff. Jak, still a teenager, escaped Shiffrin on a mining transport and eventually settled on Coveway, another planet in the Outer Rim. The strong work ethic of Coveway's inhabitants profoundly impacted Bremen. He became the colony's constable, enforcing the law and primarily defending against dangerous animal attacks. During his time as constable, he married a local woman, and they had a daughter.
Upon returning from a hunting trip, Jak Bremen discovered his village destroyed and his wife and daughter murdered. He tracked the killers to a secret Imperial garrison established by COMPNOR to complete a mission. He learned the garrison commander had ordered the killings for efficiency. Though enraged, Bremen knew he lacked the means to retaliate. He fled and found refuge in another village. Soon after arriving, he encountered a Rebel Alliance operative who told him about a strike team planning to destroy the garrison. Bremen offered his knowledge of the garrison's defenses in exchange for off-world transport. The team agreed, and the Imperial garrison was successfully neutralized.
Bremen joined the Rebel Alliance military, with his first assignment as a security officer on the cruiser Starveil. The Starveil was a warship specializing in "hit-and-fade" operations near Wild Space. Due to his previous experience in security, Bremen quickly advanced, ultimately becoming the Starveil's chief of security.
Following the Battle of Endor and the Liberation of Coruscant in 6 ABY, Bremen was promoted to colonel and reassigned to Imperial Palace Security on Coruscant. He was quickly promoted to Director of Security for the New Republic Council. Despite his competence, his security was breached when Grand Admiral Thrawn dispatched a strike team of Imperial Intelligence commandos to intercept and abduct Leia Organa Solo and her infant twins, Jacen and Jaina Solo. Although he faced no punishment, Bremen was deeply humiliated and immediately implemented stricter security measures throughout the Palace. Later, he decided to arrest Mara Jade after she was revealed to be an Emperor's Hand and potentially involved in the attack.
During the second attack on Coruscant, Bremen was assigned to the requisitioned courier Messenger to ensure news of the siege reached the Borderlands fleet.
Bremen, while not impolite, preferred work to social interaction. He was known as a strict commander who favored "by the book" strategies. This often conflicted with less conventional New Republic officials, particularly Han Solo and General Garm Bel Iblis. As a result, he was not easily impressed by famous figures like the Skywalker family or the Solo clan, once stating, "Everyone else has done more than their fair share of fighting. And dying." He was fiercely loyal to the New Republic and harbored a strong hatred for the Empire, likely stemming from the murders of his father, wife, and daughter. This animosity explained his distrust of former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade.
