A faction that broke away from the Jedi Order existed before approximately 5000 BBY. This faction consisted of previous Jedi who had embraced the dark side of the Force, and they stood in opposition to the Order's dedication to the light side of the Force. A rogue Jedi, who had learned that immense power was attainable through embracing the dark side, established the group as a sect within the Jedi religion. The Jedi High Council of that time rejected the rogue Jedi's assertion regarding the dark side unlocking the "true power" of the Force, and as a result, they banished the rebel from the Order. Despite this, his beliefs caused division within the Order. Due to his new order, the dark Jedi attracted a group of like-minded exiles, and these individuals went on to establish the Sith Order during the Hundred-Year Darkness.
