Jelasi was a Hutt considered by a number of people to be the potential successor to the criminal empire of Jabba Desilijic Tiure. Following Jabba's death, the Desilijic clan was plunged into turmoil. Jelasi and Kumac jointly became the heads of the clan after a vicious period of internal conflict. Jelasi took command of the Ig'zxyck Flare after Jabba's passing and started to "legitimize" the criminal enterprises of the Hutts. This stirred up anger in many Hutts, Kumac included, during the initial years of the New Republic. During this period, Jelasi secured a significant amount of business from the Imperial Remnant, as they attempted to secretly regain their strength. Zorba Desilijic Tiure was freed from the prison planet Kip a year later, and he discovered the authentic will of his son. Zorba used the legal system to assert his rights to everything he was entitled to, and Kumac and Jelasi lost control of the Desilijic clan.
