Kalen was the older sibling of Isolder of the Hapes Cluster, who was a Prince.
Being the firstborn son of Ta'a Chume, Kalen held the title of Chume'da within the Hapes Consortium, and the expectation was that his future spouse would rule alongside him.
During their childhood, Kalen and Isolder shared a strong bond, with Kalen frequently soothing Isolder's fears through song. As Kalen matured, however, his mother came to believe that he did not possess the qualities required to effectively lead their people.
In the year 2 ABY, Harravan and his pirate crew captured Kalen in proximity to the Terephon system. Rather than demand a ransom for Kalen's release, the pirates took his life. This tragedy, the loss of his brother and the desire for retribution, spurred Isolder to spend two years infiltrating the privateer world, seeking those responsible.
Six years later, Isolder discovered that his own mother had masterminded Kalen's assassination for political reasons.
