The Kamarians were an insectoid species originating from the planet Kamar. During the Imperial period, the most technologically advanced Kamarians had recently invented nuclear weapons, and were progressing towards the development of both clean fusion power and space travel. In spite of their technological advancements, they still maintained a feudal social structure. They organized themselves into small tribal units or city-states, known as tk'skquas, that frequently engaged in territorial disputes.
Kamarians possessed rounded heads featuring large compound eyes, four upper limbs, a pair of lower limbs, and tails capable of grasping. Their bodies were segmented and protected by an exoskeleton that retained moisture. This adaptation allowed them to survive for up to twenty-five days without consuming water before experiencing the effects of dehydration. The height of most adult Kamarians ranged from 1.3 meters to 1.7 meters.
Kamarians exhibited diversity among several races, each distinguished by variations in size, carapace coloration, linguistic traits, and cultural practices. The mountain-dwelling Kamarians were the most populous and technologically advanced, with their tk'skquas located within mountain cave systems. The Kamarian "Badlanders", who inhabited the Kamar Badlands, were another notable group. The "Badlanders" were somewhat smaller than other Kamarians, typically measuring between 1.1 and 1.4 meters in height. They also exhibited greater resilience, capable of enduring longer periods without water and adapting to even higher temperatures. Furthermore, they were more culturally and technologically primitive, utilizing only basic tools and relying on spears as their primary weapons.

Han Solo and Chewbacca once journeyed to the Kamarian Badlands, accepting local handicrafts as payment for entry to an improvised holotheater they had established. These desert inhabitants became captivated by the documentary Varn, World of Water and its depiction of the aquatic planet Varn, leading them to establish a religion centered around it. Due to communication difficulties, Solo remained unaware of the significance the documentary had acquired for the Kamarians; his only observation was that they had never witnessed holos before and were therefore impressed even by the uninteresting documentary he was showing. Solo assumed that the Kamarians would eventually tire of "World of Water" and therefore contacted a smuggler associate, Sonniod, to deliver a new holofeature to Kamar for his theater. When Sonniod complied and Solo presented the holo he had brought, "Love is Waiting," it became clear to the smugglers that the Badlanders regarded the holotheater as something more than mere entertainment. The Badlanders of the Cult of Varn reacted violently to the "sacrilege" of showing a different holo, destroying the holoprojector and consequently eliminating any possibility of appeasing them by showing them "World of Water." Solo, Chewbacca, and Sonniod were compelled to escape in the Millennium Falcon. Shortly after their departure from Kamar, Sonniod returned with a fresh copy of Varn, World of Water, and the activities of the Cult of Varn continued. Unfortunately for Solo, the Kamarians managed to locate him several months later and imprison him, demanding that he transform their world into the watery paradise he had shown them. Solo managed to escape but was hesitant to discuss his experience as a Kamarian captive, even in later years with his wife, Leia Organa Solo]. As a consequence of his ordeal, Solo developed a lasting aversion to insectoid species, such as the Killiks.
During the Dark Nest Crisis, some Kamarians, influenced by black membrosia, aided the Killik war effort. Some of them were observed questioning Jaina Solo about her father.
