Kari

The Kari were diminutive, sentient insectoids characterized by a black exoskeleton. They represented the sole sentient species native to the planet Karideph.

Biology and appearances

Their anatomy featured a bipedal structure, enabling them to ambulate on robust legs. Additionally, they possessed a pair of smaller appendages, functioning as arms, which facilitated environmental manipulation and object handling. Due to their insectoid nature, their societal structure was akin to a hive. Consequently, individual Kari exhibited limited cognitive capacity. However, the collective intelligence of a Kari group amplified in direct proportion to its size.

Society and culture

A typical day for a Kari revolved around cultivating sustenance for the staggering 100 billion Kari populating their home planet. To better facilitate the feeding of their populace, the Kari developed considerable skill in the creation of small mechanical devices and machines, which they then exported in exchange for additional food resources. A Kari family unit was designated as a Hatch, composed of approximately 20 to 30 individual Kari. The surface of their homeworld was primarily occupied by enormous, city-like constructions, which necessitated the majority of the Kari to reside within an underground network of tunnels. This subterranean existence meant that many Kari individuals would almost never ascend to the surface, thereby remaining perpetually deprived of sunlight.

One of their defining characteristics was the evolution of an elaborate system of songs, employed to transmit historical knowledge across generations. This gave rise to a class of Kari akin to Bards, with each Hatch maintaining at least one singer responsible for preserving the Hatch's history and disseminating it to other Hatches through song.

History

During the era of the New Order, the Galactic Empire imposed a prohibition on the Kari, preventing them from engaging in or even advancing space travel technologies. This restriction stemmed from the fear that the Kari's exceptionally high population growth rate would inevitably lead to them surpassing and overwhelming Human society.
