Kraaken held the position of Deputy Commander within the Aquaris Freeholders, a well-known group of smuggling and pirate operatives. He acted as the primary assistant to the Freeholder's leader, Silver Fyre, during the time of the Galactic Civil War. However, unbeknownst to Fyre and the rest of the crew, Kraaken secretly worked as an asset for the Imperial forces. His hidden agenda involved seizing control of the Freeholders for the Empire, even as Fyre voiced her support for the Rebel Alliance. Kraaken's duplicity was exposed when he made an attempt to capture the Rebel droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, but his scheme was ultimately thwarted by Fyre, along with Rebel leaders Leia Organa and Han Solo.

By the time the Galactic Civil War was underway, Kraaken had risen to the rank of Deputy Commander within the Aquaris Freeholders, a smuggling and pirate organization. He functioned as the right-hand man to Silver Fyre, the leader of the Freeholders. However, without Fyre or the rest of the Freeholders realizing it, Kraaken was secretly working as an Imperial operative. This hidden allegiance became a source of tension as the war intensified. Kraaken accompanied Fyre to the Conference of Uncommitted Worlds on Kabal, and despite his efforts to orchestrate an Imperial assault to eliminate Fyre and place himself in command of the Freeholders, he failed to prevent her from pledging support to the Rebel Alliance. Shortly after, Fyre welcomed Rebel leaders Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker to the Freeholders' underwater base on Aquaris. Assigned to monitor the visitors, Kraaken overheard that two Rebel droids, C-3PO and R2-D2, possessed crucial data for the war effort.
Kraaken shared this information with Fyre, but he secretly planned to seize the droids himself and deliver them to the Empire. Knowing that Fyre wanted to gain the Rebels' trust, especially after past disagreements with Solo during their smuggling days, Kraaken suggested a hunting trip with Solo and Skywalker. The plan was for Kraaken to attract a dangerous demonsquid, allowing Fyre to rescue them and solidify their alliance. Fyre agreed to the plan, unaware that it was a ruse: Kraaken stunned Skywalker into unconsciousness and left him vulnerable to the devilsquid, while he hurried back to the base to capture the droids. However, Organa discovered and thwarted Kraaken's betrayal, and Fyre and Solo rescued Skywalker and returned to the Freeholder base, blocking Kraaken's escape during a confrontation with Organa. Although Kraaken attempted to destroy the data in retaliation, Organa had made a copy, rendering his plot futile.
Despite earning Silver Fyre's confidence as a capable right-hand man and a talented spy, Kraaken's true allegiance was with the Galactic Empire. While he didn't raise much suspicion as Fyre's top lieutenant, Kraaken demonstrated skill in deception and a sharp mind for scheming.
Kraaken made an appearance in Traitor's Gambit, a comic strip story arc penned by Archie Goodwin, illustrated by Al Williamson, and released in 1982.
