Star Wars (comic strip)

Kashyyyk Depths title Title taken from The Kashyyyk Depths A Star Wars newspaper comic was published from 1979 until 1984. It was syndicated by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate along with the Watertown Daily Times.

A section of the comic strip was called the Star Wars Scrapbook.

Background

The comic was intended initially to have Al Williamson as both writer and artist. However, after two weeks of work, this version was abandoned. The published strip was written and drawn by Russ Manning until his declining health caused his retirement. Russ Helm then took over the writing with Princess Leia, Imperial Servant, and later Archie Goodwin created an adaptation of the novel Han Solo at Stars' End. Williamson collaborated with Goodwin on the subsequent story, The Bounty Hunter of Ord Mantell, and they continued to work together until the final strip's publication in 1984.

During the strip's run, The Official Star Wars Comic Strip Contest was held, with submissions due by Halloween of 1979. The initial five story arcs were among the limited works licensed by Lucasfilm's short-lived subsidiary, Black Falcon Ltd.

Reruns

Dark Horse Comics later edited, added color, and reprinted the majority of these stories in two comic-book series: Goodwin and Williamson's strips in Classic Star Wars, and Helm and Manning's strips in Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures. Planet of Kadril and the Sunday strips were not included in these comic books. Han Solo at Stars' End was subsequently reprinted under the Classic Star Wars banner, as was the Sunday strip titled The Constancia Affair.

In 2005, StarWars.com's Hyperspace started publishing the newspaper strips together with brand-new stories. All of Manning's daily strips were included, along with most of Goodwin's.

According to the Star Wars Insider magazine's Special Edition 2012 article "The Empire Strips Back," Dark Horse Comics had plans to compile and publish an anthology of these comics.

The comic strips were eventually anthologized as part of the Epic Collection (covering the comic-book reprints) and the three-volume Star Wars Newspaper Comics.
