The Krake Data Vault, situated on the world exclusively known as Krake's Planet, functioned as an Imperial data hub. During the Galactic Civil War, it contained comprehensive personnel files for the entire Imperial Military. This data vault was a crystallized structure, organically formed by a species of slugs endemic to Krake's Planet. Perched above a significant ravine, the vault was heavily defended. Nevertheless, Rebel operatives Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca successfully infiltrated and subsequently destroyed this seemingly impenetrable installation in 3 ABY.

The Krake Data Vault was strategically positioned on Krake's Planet, a diminutive and barren world situated within the Demetras sector of the Outer Rim. The Galactic Empire invested heavily in fortifying this data vault, as it housed complete personnel records for the entire Imperial Military throughout the Galactic Civil War. The vault was embedded within an extensive network of tunnels, sculpted by a species of burrowing slugs that inhabited the planet. These creatures had molded the structure into a colossal crystal cocoon.
The vault itself straddled a profound gorge, and the Imperials further augmented its defenses by enveloping the entire area with a robust force field. Imperial engineers also manipulated the cocoon structure to manage the movements of the slugs, which were large and aggressive enough to pose a danger to intruders. However, the vault possessed a vulnerability; external agents could gain access through an opening leading to the kitchen level. The vault boasted an immense, intricately linked computer system, essentially possessing a consciousness, accessible from any terminal within the facility using the correct passcodes. The vault also accommodated a substantial contingent of stormtroopers, complete with living quarters for those stationed on the planet.

The Krake Data Vault, constructed from a structure shaped by the burrowing slugs native to Krake's Planet, was subsequently modified and seized by the Galactic Empire to serve as a pivotal information repository. It housed exhaustive personnel files for the Imperial Military during the apex of the Galactic Civil War. In 3 ABY, Rebel operatives Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca infiltrated the vault with the intention of acquiring data proving that Rebel pilot Shira Brie was, in reality, an Imperial double agent. Skywalker had recently suffered disgrace after inadvertently shooting Brie down in a friendly fire incident. The Sith Lord Darth Vader surmised that Krake's Planet would be Skywalker's target and alerted the facility's stormtroopers to their impending arrival. However, Skywalker's decision to utilize a terminal in the kitchen area, instead of heading directly to the main database, surprised the Imperials and thwarted their planned ambush.
Consequently, the Imperials engaged the Rebels at their location, forcing Skywalker and Chewbacca to separate. Skywalker managed to escape to their starship, the Millennium Falcon, before realizing that Chewbacca was still trapped inside. From within the ship, Skywalker employed a mind trick on an officer in the vault's security center, compelling them to deactivate the facility's protective force shield. This allowed Skywalker to maneuver his ship close and rescue the Wookiee. With Chewbacca safely on board, Skywalker utilized the Falcon's weaponry to obliterate the entire data vault.
The Krake Data Vault made its debut in Star Wars (1977) 63, penned by David Michelinie and Walt Simonson, illustrated by Tom Palmer, and released in 1982.
