The Light Festival was a celebration that the Ewoks of Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor observed. Its purpose was to pay tribute to the Tree of Light and the young warriors who journeyed to it with Light Dust to revitalize its energies.
Feathers of Light were given to the young warriors as a symbol of their involvement in the revitalization process. It was believed that the Tree of Light kept the Night Spirit away. Sadly, the Duloks, who were enemies, shared this belief and sometimes tried to destroy the Tree during its vulnerable state to gain favor with the Night Spirit.
Initially, only young Ewok males of a certain age could participate in the quest to revitalize the tree. Princess Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka voiced strong disapproval of her exclusion due to her gender, while Wicket Wystri Warrick similarly protested the age requirement. Therefore, both Ewoks, along with Latara, secretly shadowed the quest group, led by Wicket's older brother Weechee, until they demonstrated their value sufficiently to be accepted into the group.
Despite significant opposition from the Duloks, the expanded group successfully completed their mission, and the interlopers performed so admirably that the Elders chose not to punish them. Instead, they bestowed Feathers upon them as well. It is reasonable to assume that the Festival's rules were subsequently eased to promote a more inclusive approach.
