Mama

During the waning years of the Galactic Republic, there lived an elderly Hutt known as Mama, who possessed a feminine disposition. She held the position of mother to several prominent Hutts belonging to the Desilijic kajidic, namely Ebor, Zorba Desilijic Tiure, Pazda Desilijic Tiure, Jiliac Desilijic Tiron, and Ziro Desilijic Tiure. She was at one time married to Ziro's father. Her residence was situated amidst the swamps of the planet Nal Hutta.

As a Hutt with a feminine nature, Mama was a member of the Desilijic kajidic, and she was considered quite aged by the time the final years of the Galactic Republic arrived. Throughout the preceding centuries, Mama birthed a number of children, including Ebor, Zorba Desilijic Tiure, Pazda Desilijic Tiure, Jiliac Desilijic Tiron, and Ziro Desilijic Tiure. She was the grandmother of Jabba Desilijic Tiure, and the great-grandmother of his son, Rotta. Mama seemed to favor her son Ebor, who had died by approximately 21 BBY, over his brother Ziro, who had brought a multitude of embarrassing disgraces upon their family. She also appeared to be oblivious to the disappearance of her husband, and unaware that he had died and was entombed on Teth.

Around 21 BBY, during the time of the Clone Wars, she made her home on the planet of Nal Hutta. Mama Desilijic was a respected member of the Hutt Grand Council for about 27 years, before leaving the council in 21 BBY, less than a month before the escape of her son Ziro, due to the strain of the clone wars. Despite the achievements of her offspring, Mama preferred to reside in a humble hut situated within the swamps of that world. During the Clone Wars, a conflict that spanned across the galaxy between the Republic and the breakaway Confederacy of Independent Systems, Ziro was imprisoned by the Hutt Grand Council inside Gardulla's Palace on Nal Hutta. Ziro, who had been arrested by the Republic and had only recently escaped, was held in captivity by the Grand Council, who were aware of his attempts to seize Jabba's position within their clan and his involvement in Rotta's kidnapping. Beyond his offenses against his family, Ziro also possessed a datapad containing details of the Hutt Cartel's illicit activities. He vowed that if he were killed, the information would be released to the authorities. Consequently, they opted to keep him under their control.

However, Ziro had an ally in his lover, a singer by the name of Sy Snootles. Snootles, who had been performing for the Grand Council, subsequently aided Ziro in escaping from his cell. The two journeyed to Mama's hut, where the elder woman gave her son a frosty greeting. Ziro believed that her aversion to him would allow him to evade the Council's attention by going somewhere they wouldn't expect. Despite the tense nature of their conversation, Mama ultimately agreed to exchange her starship for Ziro's Pongeeta-class swamp speeder.

Shortly thereafter, Mama received a visit from a bounty hunter named Cad Bane, who was working for the Council. Bane had previously secured Ziro's release from Republic custody, but the Hutts desired his return, and Bane was once again under their employ. Following Ziro's departure, Bane and his droid, Todo 360, arrived at Mama's hut and demanded to know where her son was headed. With no affection for her son and under the pressure of Bane's threatening presence, she provided the bounty hunter with the information.

Soon after this, Mama received a third set of visitors, in the form of Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Quinlan Vos, who had arrived under the orders of the Jedi Council to retrieve Ziro for the Republic. Vos, a stubborn Master, made a poor first impression by bursting through Mama's front door after slicing it open with his lightsaber and subsequently expressing his distaste for the elderly Hutt. Kenobi, however, apologized for the disruption. Mama was less than pleased with the repeated and unpleasant visits, and provided the Jedi with the information they sought. The Jedi departed in haste, leaving Mama to call after them about who would cover the cost of the door.

Ultimately, upon reaching his father's tomb on Teth, Ziro recovered the datapad containing incriminating evidence against the Council. He then planned to hand it over to the Republic in exchange for immunity and the Council's dissolution. Snootles, however, turned a blaster on her lover, as she was now working for his nephew, Jabba. Ziro was horrified by her betrayal and pleaded for his life, but she exacted revenge for his prior treachery and shot him in the chest, killing him.

Behind the scenes

Mama made her debut in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series episode "Hunt for Ziro," with Angelique Perrin providing her voice.

The character of Mama was partially inspired by the character Pearl, a vastly overweight Vampire featured in the 1998 film Blade.
