An Advanced Recon Commando called Mapper fought for the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. He was an ARC trooper involved in the attack of Pengalan IV, which was actually a Separatist ambush. When his LAAT/i gunship was downed, Mapper suffered a severe leg injury. Despite suggestions to put down Mapper because of his critical injury, Joram Kithe, an accountant sent to assess the clone troopers' effectiveness, devised a strategy that allowed the unit to finish their assignment while keeping Mapper with them.
During his convalescence, Mapper acted as a bodyguard and partner to Kithe, who had accepted a lieutenant position in Republic Intelligence. After he healed, Mapper and Kithe went to Tarhassan on a mission to assist a group of operatives in saving Edbit Teeks. With the aid of Tinian Hanther, the most skilled member of the team they joined, Kithe and Mapper were successful in their mission.
During the Clone Wars, Mapper was an ARC trooper in service to the Grand Army of the Republic. Like all clone troopers, he was a clone originating from the Human male bounty hunter Jango Fett. Mapper participated in a Republic attack aimed at Pengalan IV. Joram Kithe, an accountant, was there to analyze the performance of the clone troopers, unaware that the soldiers were all ARCs. The Republic's attack backfired when the factory they were targeting turned out to be a Separatist trap. The LAAT/i gunship carrying the ARCs was shot down, causing Mapper to sustain a serious leg injury in the resulting wreckage.
Because his injuries would slow the other troopers down, Kithe, now in command, was informed that Mapper might need to be euthanized. Kithe rejected this option and instead set up an ambush for a CIS patrol sent to find the downed clone troopers. The ambush was a success for the ARCs, and the squad managed to seize an airspeeder that would allow them to transport Mapper to Tur Lorkin, the closest settlement. Mapper, who possessed a working datapad containing comprehensive maps of the area, was designated navigator, thus earning him his nickname.
Mapper's infiltration abilities were the best in the unit, but his leg injury limited his effectiveness, keeping him on the sidelines for most of the action in Tur Lorkin. While his fellow clones and Kithe attacked Tur Lorkin's secret diamond boron missile factory, Mapper waited outside on a modified STAP, providing crucial support fire as the team exited the factory, eliminating the majority of the droids lying in wait.
Following this, the unit escaped the planet aboard a stolen starship, confident that their objective had been achieved.
Mapper's Pengalan IV injury required a period of recovery, separating him from his unit. During this period, he was assigned to Kithe, who had fully committed to his role as a lieutenant within Republic Intelligence. Serving as Kithe's partner and bodyguard, Mapper adopted the alias Mapper Gann and grew a beard to appear as a non-clone. After his recovery, Mapper and Kithe were dispatched to Tarhassan on a mission where Mapper was able to use his skills, and tasked to assist a group of agents in rescuing Edbit Teeks.
Unfortunately, Kithe's success as an accountant-turned-intelligence agent inspired the Republic to create a program to replicate his achievements. As a result, Mapper and Kithe were paired with three bureaucrats on their first intelligence mission. Kithe had to step in multiple times to correct errors made by the other agents and had to secretly defy mission commander Cherek Tuhm to save a prisoner's life and obtain information about Teeks. Mapper provided excellent backup to Kithe, and the other agents grew fond of him, directing their frustration towards Kithe instead.
Nonetheless, Mapper considered them incompetent and didn't hesitate to knock Tuhm unconscious during their jailbreak of Teeks to prevent him from ruining the operation. Ultimately, with the help of Tinian Hanther, the most capable member of the team, Kithe and Mapper successfully completed their assigned mission.
Aaron Allston created Mapper, and Tommy Lee Edwards illustrated him for the short story The Clone Wars: The Pengalan Tradeoff, which was first featured in Star Wars Insider 65 on January 21, 2003.
