Mary Elizabeth Burroughs, a devotee of Star Wars, conceived the Scalt for the Star Wars Galaxy Magazines's Design An Alien competition. Her submission garnered an honorable mention within the category for those under 16. At the time of her entry's publication, she was 14 years old. Currently, she works as a speculative fiction author, having participated in the Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers' Workshop at UC, San Diego in 2008.
