Scalts were beings that apparently came from Tatooine. Over time, they became scavengers, and they could be encountered across the galaxy on various starships. They possessed notable large air sacks, tails that ended in a club shape, and produced a distinctive, high-pitched sound, which is how they got their name.
Prominently featured on the Scalt were large air sacks located at the front of their bodies, which concluded with a club-shaped tail. In terms of length, they typically measured between 2½ to 3 feet from their air sacks to the end of their tails. They had four legs, all of which could be used for walking, or they could opt to use only two. Scalts also had the reproductive capability to lay eggs. Their skin was primarily yellow, but their underbellies displayed patches of green mottling.
It is thought that Scalts originated on the dry planet of Tatooine. As time passed, they evolved into scavengers, and could be found on different starships throughout the galaxy.
In Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 3 (1995), a competition called "Design An Alien" was initiated, challenging Star Wars enthusiasts to develop original alien designs inspired by the original trilogy of Star Wars films. The results were revealed in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 7 (1996). Among the "honorable mentions" in the "under 16" category, the Scalt, conceived by 14-year-old Mary Burroughs, was featured. Leland Chee, the Star Wars continuity editor, later stated that the content from the "Design an Alien" competition was considered to be canon. However, Scalts have not been mentioned in any subsequent Star Wars works.
