Maze, previously known as Alpha-26 or A-26, held the rank of captain and was an Advanced Recon Commando of the Alpha-class within the Grand Army of the Republic during the era of the Clone Wars.
Jedi General Arligan Zey was assisted by Maze in overseeing the extraction of Omega Squad from Qiilura after their mission proved successful.
For the majority of the war, Maze was stationed on Coruscant, providing assistance to Zey. A resentment developed within Maze towards Null-class Advanced Recon Commando Null-11, known as Ordo, after Ordo physically assaulted Maze when the captain attempted to instruct Ordo to obey Jedi Generals.
Maze eventually achieved his retribution. Following the neutralization of a terrorist cell on Coruscant by Ordo and the clone commandos of Omega Squad, Maze attended a victory celebration hosted by Kal Skirata. During the performance of the Mandalorian war chant, Dha Werda Verda, Ordo received his comeuppance, as Maze "accidentally" punched him in the mouth on multiple occasions. Subsequently, Maze and Ordo departed together. Zey later offered Maze the opportunity to leave the Grand Army should he ever desire to do so. From that moment forward, Ordo felt a mutual understanding existed between himself and Maze.
As the conflict continued, Maze spent his free time reading and formulating strong opinions regarding the state of the Republic. While not a supporter of the political leadership under Palpatine, he believed the Jedi should refrain from interfering, as they were not elected officials.
During the Great Jedi Purge, Maze went back to Special Operations Brigade headquarters and discovered Ordo and General Zey in conversation about the events leading up to the purge. Ordo pressed a wounded Zey for confirmation on whether the Jedi had indeed attempted to overthrow Palpatine. Zey admitted that they had, stating it was his duty because Palpatine had revealed himself to be a Sith Lord, known as Darth Sidious. Significantly, Maze inquired about the nature of the Sith, and Ordo explained that they were the exact opposite of the Jedi. Ordo departed, leaving Zey wounded in a chair, and Maze with his blaster drawn, pleading with Zey to cooperate peacefully as if he was simply arresting him. Zey issued his final order, requesting Maze to execute him, knowing the consequences of being captured alive. Maze disobeyed and deliberately missed Zey, giving Ordo the impression that he had carried out the execution. Later, Maze reached out to the Skirata Clan, seeking refuge on Kyrimorut on Mandalore. Bardan Jusik was dispatched to retrieve Maze and unexpectedly encountered Zey, who was with Maze. Upon arriving on Mandalore, the two greeted a shocked and surprised Ordo.
