The MC80B Star Cruiser represented a warship design from Mon Calamari engineered to bolster the New Republic's burgeoning fleet. The initial MC80B Star Cruiser was named Mon Remonda.
While maintaining a general resemblance to its predecessors, the MC80B prioritized frontal firepower by concentrating gun emplacements towards the front. The primary reactor was situated on the ventral hull, while the bridge was located dorsally, near the middle of the ship. Hangar facilities were integrated into the ship's sides.

Serving as an intermediate step, the MC80B offered enhancements over the original MC80. The MC80B boasted a significantly strengthened hull, along with redundant deflector shield generators, resulting in enhanced shielding capabilities. Turbolaser batteries and shield projectors were distributed across the hull in blisters. A sensor array was positioned at the bow's tip. These robust vessels were designed to endure substantial damage while overwhelming the weaker shields of Imperial vessels.
The MC80B's armament consisted of forty-eight turbolaser batteries and twenty ion cannons. These weapons were arranged in banks of twelve and four respectively, enabling the MC80B to focus its firepower effectively on a single target. The MC80B possessed greater firepower than an Imperial Star Destroyer.
In contrast to the later MC90 Star Cruiser and similarly to the MC80, the MC80B's design did not cater to multiple species. The holographic displays and monitors were optimized for Mon Calamari eyesight, and some controls demanded movements that were almost impossible for Humans to execute.

The Mon Remonda, the first of its kind, began its service approximately a year and a half following the Battle of Endor. These highly capable ships spearheaded the New Republic's forces during its early stages, before being superseded by the MC90 Star Cruiser four years later.
The MC80B continued its service within the New Republic Navy throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War. It remained in frontline service after the government evolved into the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.
In Part 12 of Jason Fry's endnotes for The Essential Guide to Warfare, Paul R. Urquhart contemplated including information in the book indicating that the Republic-class Star Destroyer and the MC80B Star Cruiser were initially envisioned as the same vessel, but with different designations. However, this detail was ultimately omitted.
