Melvin Fett, a humanoid male who made his living as a bounty hunter, plied his trade during the era of the Galactic Empire. He was related to the celebrated hunter Boba Fett as his cousin, which only served to amplify the humor his peers found in his constant failures to capture his targets. Sometime before the events of 6 BBY, Fett took on a contract to apprehend Jar Jar Binks, the Gungan Senator representing the world of Naboo, hoping this would restore his reputation among his fellow hunters. He tracked Binks to the desert planet Tatooine, but the planet's unforgiving environment caught him off guard, putting him at a distinct disadvantage. So great was his confusion that he mistook a Senator Jar Jar Binks commemorative drinking cup for the Senator himself. Despite capturing the cup, Fett once again failed to secure his bounty.

A humanoid male and the cousin of the more famous mercenary Boba Fett, Melvin Fett was born into the ranks of Clan Fett. As he matured, Fett decided to pursue a vocation as a bounty hunter. He attempted to claim at least a few bounties, but his efforts were consistently unsuccessful, leading to ridicule from his bounty hunter colleagues. During the Galactic Empire's rule, Fett, seeking to prove his worth, accepted a contract for the capture of Jar Jar Binks, the Gungan Imperial Senator and representative of his homeworld, Naboo. His investigation into the Gungan led him to the Outer Rim world of Tatooine, which he mistakenly believed to be a "dessert" planet instead of a "desert" planet. Hoping for a simple and triumphant capture on a world filled with cupcakes and ice cream, Fett set off for the sunny Tatoo system.
Upon his arrival on the desert surface of Tatooine, Fett was taken aback to discover that the planet's environment offered little in the way of sweets, but possessed a great quantity of sand and two scorching suns. Fett had brought his heavy Mandalorian armor with him, which only exacerbated the situation—he began to perspire profusely in the hot climate and suffered from visual impairments that clouded his eyesight. Disoriented, yet still determined, Fett eventually found his way to an area near a refreshment vendor.
Soon after, Fett stumbled upon a local Jawa enjoying soda from a Senator Jar Jar Binks commemorative drinking cup. The drinking vessel's lid was made in the Senator's likeness, and it was equipped with "talking action"; the trinket played loud audio clips of Binks. Fett immediately recognized the voice of his target, but, due to his impaired vision, he confused the Gungan-shaped cup for the Senator himself. He drew his blaster pistol to apprehend the Gungan but tripped on a small, black desert rock, causing him to fall to the ground and launch the blaster at the unsuspecting Jawa. The weapon struck and knocked the native unconscious, causing the novelty cup to fly from his hands to Fett. Delighted to have collected what he thought was his first successful bounty, Fett eagerly anticipated sharing the news of his accomplishment with the other bounty hunters.

Melvin Fett's professional inadequacy was a constant source of frustration for him, and a characteristic that made him the target of ridicule among his fellow bounty hunters. The persistent mockery and lack of respect from his colleagues often brought Fett to tears. Despite their disdain, Fett longed for their acceptance. He was notably clumsy and easily deceived, even believing that Tatooine was a dessert planet. Despite his lack of professional success, Fett maintained a generally optimistic perspective. When he successfully captured what he believed to be Senator Jar Jar Binks, he was overjoyed, eagerly anticipating recognition as an equal by the bounty hunters he associated with. Fett frequently engaged in self-talk, delivering lengthy monologues about the specifics of his mission and revealing his innermost thoughts.
Melvin Fett wore a suit of Mandalorian armor that included a green jumpsuit extending over his boots, and was augmented with protective padding on his elbows and knees. His stomach and chest were shielded by a thick armored carapace. The padding was secured with brown straps, similar to those supporting his blaster pistol's holster. Fett's head was covered by a Mandalorian helmet, painted in green and red, which was paired with a broadband antenna. He wore light green protective gloves, and his neck was protected by a thin, dark green scarf. All the cumbersome equipment he carried presented challenges during his time on Tatooine, causing excessive sweating and impairing his vision.
Melvin Fett made his debut and only appearance in the short comic "Melvin Fett," featured in Star Wars Tales 20. James Kochalka was the creator, writer, and artist of his story. Fett's existence in Star Wars canon has not been officially confirmed in any other source.
