Micromines represented an Imperial innovation in space-based weaponry, designed as mines capable of overwhelming a specific area without being spotted by opposing starship sensor arrays. Their size was remarkably small, allowing them to penetrate a spacecraft's meteor shields, yet they possessed significant destructive power. Constructed typically with a minute quantity of anti-matter contained within a magnafield housing, they were nearly impossible for adversaries to detect. Although initial concepts involved large-scale manufacturing of these destructive devices, their comprehensive deployment in the vicinity of the planet Shiva IV demonstrated that such a production level would be financially unsustainable, leading to the termination of their operational use.
An alternative form of micromine existed as an antipersonnel variant, utilized by specialized units like the clone commandos, including Darman. These miniature mines were designed for deployment via throwing or attachment to various surfaces, and could be activated either through a timer mechanism or via remote detonation. Darman, for example, employed a specific model known as the AP Micromines to cause the destruction of a hillside.
