Mission to Gala

The assignment known as the Mission to Gala was a task given by the Jedi High Council following a request from the Monarch of Gala.

Context

Gala, a prosperous and beautiful world that was formerly under the rule of the Beju-Tallah dynasty, was located relatively close to Phindar, a mining planet under the control of the Syndicat. The Galacians who were native inhabitants of the planet were split into three competing factions: those who lived in the city, those who lived by the sea, and those who lived in the hills. Following the passing of King Cana, Queen Veda came to the realization that the monarchy was becoming less powerful and that the people desired a democratic vote. She gave in to their demands and made preparations to hold an election in 44 BBY.

Given the shift in governance and the potential threat of sabotage, Queen Veda made a request to the Jedi High Council for assistance in mediating the situation. The Council promptly sent two Jedi who were present in the system at that time.

Objective

Upon their arrival, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi promptly met with the Queen and started their search for any potential saboteurs. There were three individuals in the running. Deca Brun enjoyed widespread backing because of his pledges to bring about change and increase prosperity. Prince Beju, Queen Veda's son, was also a candidate for governor. He held the opinion that he had a birthright to govern as the legitimate successor to the throne and opposed the election. The last contender was Wila Prammi, who had previously held the position of underminister.

Shortly before the election was to take place, Kenobi found out that Deca Brun had gotten substantial campaign donations from the Offworld Mining Corporation. In exchange, Offworld would be granted broad mining rights, which would have had a devastating impact on the environment. At the same time, Beju found out that he was not the rightful heir to the Galacian throne; rather, Elan, the leader of the hill people, was actually his older half-sister. Unknown to the Jedi, Prince Beju had allied himself with the Syndicat, who had offered to assist Beju in seizing control of Gala in return for power. Beju intended to undermine the elections on his planet by cutting off the bacta supply and then restoring it once the people began to suffer, which would make the Prince appear as a hero and make the other two candidates for the elections look worse. However, his scheme failed when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn exposed it. Because they looked so much alike—both being young boys of about the same height—Kenobi disguised himself as the Prince. Obi-Wan pretended to be the arrogant Prince in order to aid the ruse, and he was able to obtain information that supported Beju's treachery. Beju was then put to the test using the Mark of the Crown, which would determine whether or not he was the rightful heir. As Beju was aware, the results were unfavorable, demonstrating that Elan was actually the rightful heir. Beju withdrew from the election and instead threw his support behind Prammi. He also told the voters about Deca Brun's unethical agreement. Lonnag Giba, the Head of the Council of Ministers, was also attempting to seize the throne. The converted Beju assisted in foiling the plot, and the Jedi took Giba into custody.

Outcome

Following Giba's arrest, Beju selflessly withdrew from the election and instead backed Prammi. As a result, Wila Prammi won by a landslide, becoming Gala's first governor.

The Jedi were thanked for their service, and they then departed on a new and perilous mission: the Mission to Melida/Daan, a mission that would put Obi-Wan Kenobi's dedication to the Jedi Order to the test.
